Akoros Tyrador

The Tyrador family has long enjoyed a history of influence and wealth in Thay. As a vastly landed noble family, the Tyradors command considerable resources to use to their benefit. At least one child in every generation gains an apprenticeship as a Red Wizard, and all children, regardless of their arcane abilities, learn the fine arts of diplomacy and political maneuvering. No Tyrador has ever had a position of absolute power, such as tharchion or zulkir, but the family holds enough clout to maneuver Thays political atmosphere in favorable ways. For the most part, the Tyradors like this state of affairs, since it frees them from any real responsibility, and they continue to reap the benefits of being powerful nobility.

Akoros Tyrador is the latest Red Wizard to arise from the wealthy Tyradors. The second child of the current generation, he was approved for arcane training even as his older brother Esaias was not. Knowing that he stood to inherit considerably less than Esaias always made Akoros jealous of his brother. When he found out that he was to become a Red Wizard and Esaias was not, the younger Akoros swelled with pride. Each time he visited home after receiving his first magical tattoo, Akoros made sure his brother could always see it. Unfortunately for Akoros, if Esaias cared, he never let on. The younger boy felt continually frustrated by the one-sided rivalry, but found nothing short of being named the real heir could alleviate his resentment toward his older brother. He threw himself into his magic and his diplomatic studies to try and distract himself. Unfortunately, his dislike of his brother spread into a railing against the very etiquette and pomp he needed to follow to stay ahead. Akoros became frustrated with noble societys demands and requirements and began to desperately seek release from the decorum surrounding his life. He reviled the fact that these same societal rules required him to make nice with his brother if he wanted to continue reaping his family benefits once his parents were gone. Akoros knew he should be the one in charge, not his brother, who wasnt even good enough to be a Red Wizard.

He found unexpected relief from his frustrations from a fellow apprentice. Iksender was a handsome and observant young Mulan man of common birth with an affection for men of higher status. Not only was he persistent and ambitious, but Iksender also keyed into Akoross frustrations very quickly. He knew that even after graduating from his apprenticeship, his common birth would make advancement more difficult unless he got a noble patron, and who better to be his patron than the young Tyrador apprentice. Iksender warmed up to Akoros very quickly by expressing frustrations similar to Akoross own and readily seduced the young, angsty, and frustrated nobleman into a tryst.

The relationship between the two young men lasted for the rest of their apprenticeship, though there was little love between them. Akoros used Iksender as an outlet for his frustrations with society and Iksender used Akoros as a means to get ahead in life. Beyond that, all that existed between them was raw, unbridled lust. After graduating, Akoros realized the sort of liability Iksender could be for him if their relationship ever got out so he used his family influence to set Iksender up in a comfortable administrative position in a prosperous enclave in a remote part of the Realms. He made sure his ex-lover was kept pampered enough that he wouldnt talk, but didnt receive too much from it and was far enough away that he wouldnt be able to cause any troubles. The last Akoros ever heard of Iksender, the common-born wizard had risen to be head of the enclave.

Ironically, the experience with Iksender and Akoross own lingering frustrations with society led him to develop a canny sense of diplomacy. He looked back on the affair with more bemusement than regret. Iksender had used the rules of society those same rules Akoros had despised so much against him, and to great profit. Though angry at first, Akoross ire quickly turned to laughter. If a commoner wizard could learn to use the societal conventions that Akoros so adamantly despised, then why couldnt he, too, benefit from them? He realized that Iksender could manipulate him with minimal resources, he could use his familys power to achieve anything if he used the system correctly. Though he never developed any greater respect for social etiquette, his view changed. He no longer saw the rules as constraints. Rather, he saw them as tools to be wielded and manipulated much like his fingers commanded the threads of the Weave. The awakening realization pushed Akoros into studying the arts of politics and diplomacy.

Akoross own personal enlightenment also helped him get over his animosity toward Esaias. No longer did Akoros want to become head of the household. Being the head meant he had to devote far more time to household duties and would have much less time to scheme and manipulate his way into power. It was a typical Tyrador attitude work from the side and pull the strings of those on the stage. Akoros knew, though, that as long as he could keep his familys resources at his disposal, hed be able to acquire nearly anything he wanted out of Thay.

After graduating from his apprenticeship, Akoros toyed with the idea of entering the slaving business. He decided against it. The slave trade was profitable, but it approached the world from an angle that would take him away from the thick of politics and manipulation. So instead, he pulled strings in the courts in Eltabbar and landed himself a position as a judge. The job was perfect for him. From his place as an arbiter of the law he found many more strings at his fingertips, and he gleefully pulled those strings to his benefit.

However, in Thay, no matter how fair (or unfair) of a law official a person is, there is always a threat of bodily harm and death. Akoros quickly learned that he needed something to stand between himself and anyone who wished him harm. Protection came in the form of a strong, sturdy Rashemi fighter who put a very decisive end to a fight that had broken out in Akoross courtroom.

Zeren was a powerful fighter, fiercely loyal to the Red Wizards, if a bit overzealous. He came from a long line of Rashemi warriors who devoted themselves to serving Thay. Zeren had been hired as a courtroom guard and was on duty during one of Akoross sessions. It was a usual sort of petty dispute property damage. One minor noble accused another minor noble of killing his slave. The accused, of course, adamantly denied his involvement and a heated argument broke out. Before Akoros could gain control of the situation, the argument escalated into a fistfight. Akoros didnt even have to look in Zerens direction. The dusky fighter leapt into the fray and put an immediate stop to the fisticuffs. The trial adjourned for the day with both the plaintiff and the defendant leaving to seek healing for their broken noses. Akoros smiled when he saw the scene. Zeren would be perfect.

After the courts ended for the day, Akoros approached Zeren and offered to welcome the Rashemi into his personal service as a bodyguard and a knight in commendation for his performance in the courtroom. It was the opportunity every warrior in Zerens family hoped for a chance to personally and directly serve the Red Wizards, and the dusky man accepted graciously. Akoros pulled the proper strings and arranged to have Zeren bound to him through the Thayan tattooing rituals, officially making the Rashemi his knight. Zeren, eager to serve his new master, completed the ritual, and then stood loyally by Akoross side.

Zeren intrigued Akoros. The Rashemi was devoutly loyal, perhaps to a fault, but also possessed much more intelligence and keener senses than Akoros had even realized at first. The more Zeren was around, the more Akoros realized he could genuinely count on his knight to get things done. The wizard never felt inclined to be harsh toward Zeren if the knight failed a task. Instead, he came to trust Zeren almost implicitly and made the Rashemi his right hand in most endeavors. Akoros unwound privately around Zeren, using his knight as an outlet for the stresses of having to deal with society and its rules and conventions. This gave way into using Zeren as an outlet for other frustrations, a service the Rashemi performed reluctantly at first, but gradually accepted and even began to enjoy, as it contented his master and Zeren himself derived enjoyment from that as much as the nights spent with Akoros.

Akoros continued his job as a judge for a few more years until he heard Zulkir Aznar Thrul wanted to organize an enclave to the wizard city of Sshamath. He saw this as a perfect opportunity to seize power and get out of the drudgery of life as a judge. If he grabbed this position, hed be the head of an enclave in a location Thay had almost no power over. Hed have absolute control over Thayan interests in the city and would be able to further his own ambition for power with the resources he could gather in Sshamath. And finally, it gave him a chance to ingratiate himself to Thrul by helping Thrul get what he wanted out of the Guild of Foreign Trade. It was perfect. Ever eager to be the puppet master behind the scenes, Akoros began plying his familys resources to get himself noticed by Thrul and the Guild.

His buyoff worked out. Thrul contacted the Tyradors and sent for Akoros. They met and Akoros amiably agreed to lead the enclave to Sshamath. Accompanied by Zeren, two other wizards, and a contingent of blooded orc guards, Akoros set off for the City of Dark Weavings.

Physical Appearance

Akoros resembles most Mulan. Hes tall and slim, with yellow-tinted skin and deep dark eyes. He keeps himself religiously shaved, revealing the mystic tattoos that cover his body. Taken altogether, the tattoos resemble a balor, but most people never see the entire image underneath his red robes. He walks with his back straight and chin up, carrying himself with a regal, confident poise.

Personality

He is unfailingly calm and polite in public, and is careful not to be too polite unless the situation demands. Beneath the surface, he holds a quiet disdain for etiquette and social mores. Zeren, more than anyone else, has seen the other side of Akoros, a side that readily gives into vices. Hes ambitious to a fault, and coldly calculating. His determination has gotten him nowhere but up so far, which has started to lead to overconfidence on his part. Akoros, more than any of the others sent with him, may be under-prepared for what awaits him in the City of Dark Weavings. He will have to learn all over again what strings he can pull and what strings are best left alone, only this time his family resources will not provide as much support if any at all. He is not entirely aware of it, but if he does not tread carefully in Sshamath, he may receive a bite too deep to recover from.
