Ergin Kadri

The Kadris have traditionally been a quiet and unobtrusive family on the political scene, delving just deeply enough into the machinations of Thayan nobility to keep afloat. Typically neutral in most political squabbles, the Kadri family maintains its foothold in Thay by providing a service most Thayan nobles cant. The Kadri own vast lands across Thay that are rich in metals, stone, and valuable minerals. Ever industrious and mercantile-minded, the Kadris have a history of turning their abundant natural resources into profit. Capitalizing on their natural wealth, the Kadris eventually became rich enough to build their own foundries and process their own ores and stone. They took their industrialism one step further and began producing finished goods of excellent quality. As more and more Kadris became Red Wizards, the family turned its attentions to producing rarer, more valuable products from intelligent magic items to golems to somewhat lesser magic items like staves and rods. The blue dragon crest of the Kadri family is recognized by many Thayans as a symbol of excellent quality and craftsmanship. When the Enclave system started, the Kadris profited maginificently. The Guild of Foreign Trade preferred to sell cheap magic items to flood the market and while the Kadris werent willing to cut back on the quality of their work, they found that the Guild was perfectly willing to supply a few high-quality works in with the lesser goods.

Not long after the enclaves began, the Kadris were blessed with their fourth child, a boy named Ergin. The boy exhibited great aptitude for the familys magecraft trade. Bright-eyed, quick-witted and highly intelligent, he was approved at a young age for Red Wizard training. The Kadris expected this. As a family of skilled mage crafters, children with magical aptitude were common. However, when Zulkir Aznar Thrul came to the family with an offer to personally sponsor and teach Ergin, the Kadris were both surprised and elated. To have a zulkir teach their son in the Art was a great honor that even the politically neutral Kadri family could not deny. And so, young Ergin went to study evocation under Aznar Thrul.

Naturally, Thrul had an ulterior motive for taking the Kadri boy into his care. Infuriated by the inability to get his hands directly in the prosperous coffers of the Guild of Foreign Trade, Thrul began trying more roundabout routes. The Guild sat right under his nose in the city of Bezantur, so he deserved a good chunk of its profits. Warming up to the Kadri family was one way to get his own treasuries a little fuller. The Kadris avidly supported the guild and put many of their resources into its affairs. With one of their children under his wing, Thrul could subtly funnel some of their wealth to him.

Thrul treated Ergin remarkably well for a Red Wizard apprentice. He gave the young man considerable personal attention, plenty of time to visit home, and excellent tutelage without most of the abuse and tribulations that other apprentices had to deal with. The zulkir actively encouraged Ergin to learn the arts of magecraft and pursue his familys trade, ingratiating himself to the boy to win his familys favor. To Ergin, Thrul became a friendly uncle figure, someone he felt he could trust like his own father.

Ergin completed his apprenticeship at the age of fifteen. Thruls careful teaching combined with Ergins natural aptitude made the young man a skilled wizard fresh out of his apprenticeship. Thrul wasted no time in putting his new protege to work. After Ergin graduated, Thrul began commissioning him to create various magical items from weapons to rings. The young man excelled in weapon smithing especially and could craft magic weapons with quality that rang true to his family name.

Thrul bided his time for the perfect moment and seized the opportunity four years later to send his own enclave to Sshamath. The zulkir already chose the Tyrador to lead the expedition and selected a down-on-his-luck, common-born illusionist who'd fallen out of the guild's good graces to accompany the mission. But he needed someone he knew he could trust implicitly to help keep things in order. That person was Ergin Kadri. The zulkir told his protege he needed someone skilled in magecraft to accompany the mission and handle special orders and other affairs, and he couldn't trust anyone other than Ergin to do the job properly. Ergin, of course, was more than happy to oblige his trusted mentor. So, the young evoker set off for the Underdark with Akoros and Cevdet.

Ergin stands just shy of six feet tall. Like all Mulan, he keeps his body shaved and tattooed. His tattoos resemble a stylized blue dragon, homage paid to his family crest. He possesses an extremely muscular build for a Mulan. Taut, corded muscle stretches across his entire frame, but his body is sleek, not bulky. Mulan as a general rule tend to be thin, and even a Mulan as physically inclined as Ergin finds it difficult to bulk up. His eyes are a deep, dark brown, but sparkle with suppressed energy. When he casts spells, the energy literally glows, flickering different colors in the depths of his gaze. Unlike most wizards, Ergin's hands are dotted with calluses from all of his manual labor. While he dons the red robes of his station in most situations, inside his workshop he prefers to eschew upper body clothing altogether unless the job requires an apron or the like. Gloves, breeches, and sturdy boots make up the extent of his work clothes.

If left to his own devices, he fidgets constantly. In the lax envrionment of his apprenticeship, Ergin never learned how to sit still. A craftsman by nature, combined with the endless energy of an evoker, the young man has to keep himself occupied or he grows increasingly restless. If he can be caught long enough to have a conversation, he's extremely personable, even friendly for a Red Wizard. A bit nave, he places most of his trust in Thrul and his own father, but tends to give strangers the benefit of the doubt. Still, forced to choose the word of an outsider or the word of a fellow Wizard, Ergin would stand beside his own comrades. He enjoys chatting about his work, but others find it very easy to discuss nearly any topic with him, a trait some find endearing and others find useful for their own ends. He understands he needs to be more careful about what he says in Sshamath (Thrul gently cautioned him against talking too much in the Underdark), and will be more guarded about his conversations with anyone but Akoros and Cevdet.

Ergin travels with two companions. The first is Tunc, a shocker lizard and his familiar. The young man found bonding with an animal difficult for a time and never actually succeded until well into his apprenticeship. When he found Tunc, though, he found a creature that mirrored the boundless energy Ergin himself possessed. Tunc is alert, swift and always on edge. The little lizard is easily spooked and if Ergin's not in empathy range, it tends to reflexively zap anything that surprises it.

The other companion is Bora, a nimblewright golem that Ergin's father crafted and bound to his son as a graduation present. An intelligent construct, Bora is Ergin's most reliable source of conversation. The two get along very well and are rarely found separate from each other. Bora's ability to shapeshift into a humanoid form makes it easier to accompany Ergin in places where golems may not be appropriate, and its speedy, agile fighting style neatly complements Ergin's explosive magics.
