I posted more about the specifics of upcoming changes to the Realms (and hence the campaign) in the General Discussion thread if anyone wants to read them.

Without going into spoilers, there's a very high possibility that the Realms timeline is going to shift 100 years in the future for 4e.
Obviously, that would have a lot of impact.

They are leaving a gap of 10 years until the big event that causes the mechanical changes between editions happens, so we have at least some room to play with current characters and npcs.

However, once we decide to actually jump into 4E, if there is the passing of an entire century, some chars (and definitely some npcs) will have died simply due to old age (if not for other reasons).

Anyway, just bringing this up so everyone has a chance to digest it and mull over the possibilities. Thankfully, most of the actual characters won't die from old age, but some will be in the Venerable age category (like playing an elderly human character). While its fine to keep some of our chars around like that, it'll be time for new blood to take over as primary characters.
While they removed Potions of Longevity, there is the epic feat that increases your lifespan, so that's a possibility for anyone who wants to keep a beloved character more hale and adventure-worthy.

The new lowbies could be the possibility for playable epics at that point, but that'll be personal preference.

I suggest that whomever you decide to keep around as a playable epic, that we all in turn create some 1st levels in the new rule system as well, come next September. With such a large time jump, its finally feasible for any of our chars to have had children all grown up now and ripe for playing.

There's still a lot up in the air as to what exactly is going on, and the time jump may not be so drastic by the time the edition comes out, but like I said, its a strong possibility that I want everyone aware of, and want everyone thinking about what they'd like to do in such an event ahead of time.

As some of the developers have already brought up recently, there's no way to fit in all the options from all the 3.5 books into the new core books, so while we will be able to rebuild our characters from any level in the 1 - 30 range right away, we won't be able to get the exact flavor we want.

That'd have the most impact on our epic chars, and I'll let it up to y'all if you'd like to revise them right away, or wait while until more books come out.

This is all sort of a pain in the arse, to be sure, but I'm proposing to allow each player to have three chars to alternate with, considering our new lowbies will be escalated in level by then.

As there are three tiers in the new system (levels 1-10, 11-20, and 21-30 respectively, with some rules opened up for each new tier that the others don't have), I'd like to just make it one char in each tier.

While that may not seem like enough of a jump for our new lowbies, it'd help get acclimated to the new system within each tier.

So it'd be one new char made at 1st level, another somewhere in the second tier range (your current new lowbie), and a third in the epic range (your current epic char).

The exact levels will have to be determined when the books actually come out, and it will be discussed and voted on by the group as a whole. While our current epics could theoretically and reasonably start out at 30th level already, there won't be any room for upward movement at all for possibly quite some real-world time (no word on whether or not they'll actually develope anything beyond those levels at any point, to be honest).

They also appear to be absorbing certain classes into other classes, so be prepared to think outside the box and deal with the changes ahead of time, in case your current core classes don't make the cut (or are altered so much you can no longer recognize them). Even if they do take something out, you are supposed to be able to create pretty much the same thing within the context of another class (via Talent and Feat choices).
Its already been stated that psionics won't be coming out in the inital core books, but the developers and testers have opted right now to simply use a wizard and call it psionics for the time being. We may have to do something like that for a bit.
